Puppet , Indonesia

As a time when the mass media are as much part of any culture, it is impossible to look at art from a sectarian point of view. Modern day artists have been exposed to western art, and it would be unrealistic to pretend that this has been of no consequence.
On the contrary, it has has help them overcome the constraints of Asian traditions and express themselves more freely. Western concepts of sex, angst, death and self which formerly had no place in SE Asian art have, in recent years, become part of the vocabulary of young artists, albeit in a larger socio-political context. This is not to say that the Asian artist is always free to do what he wants. A set of strict morals still prevail, particular in Indo, Malaysia and Singapore, and artists who do not abide by these rules have been obstructed, ostracised and even punished.
Nevertheless new means of expression have allowed artists to make themselves understood. Thai artist Arya Rasdharmrearnsook voiced it most clearly when shes aid: “the age of CHOICE has arrived, but we cannot cut loose from these socio-cultural traditions. I often wish I could reach that ultimate state of sel-realisation: individuality through the process of making art. The traditional Asian public, however, which is not used to art as a form of criticism, is not always appreciative of these novel ideas. The general lack of support avant-garde artists has given undeserved prominence to decorative art, both abstract and representational.

It has been argued that SE Asian art is essentially a decorative art form and therefore a culturally appropriate style of expression. But what appears decorative may not necessarily be so. The decorative qualities of wayang figures or calligraphy are unquestionable. Yet at the same time, their aesthetic exterior conceals and interioir eloquence. In this age if artistic awakening, there is no doubt that countless artists do take advantage of the fact that traditional motiffs appeal to a large audience. They accordingly use them as design elements for commercial reasons, transforming them into nothing more than pretentious, hollow symbols. Hence, the current confusion on the art scene in SE art today…
